Leading Document Imaging and Management Equipment Manufacturer Signs on with First-of-its-Kind “Zero Waste to Landfill” Program for 100 Percent Reuse of Copier and Printer Cartridges and Consumable Imaging Products
HEBRON, KY — September 18, 2008 — Close the Loop, Inc., a leading global recycler of imaging consumables, has announced a partnership with Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc. (TABS). TABS is the first manufacturer of all-in-one copy/scan/print/fax monochrome and color multifunction products (MFPs) to participate in Close the Loop’s “Zero Waste to Landfill” recycling program, the company’s most comprehensive environmental sustainability initiative to date, allowing for 100-percent recycling of collected consumable supplies, including toner bottles, copier and laser cartridges, drum units, toner bags and other bulk imaging consumables.
Founded in Australia in 2000 by entrepreneur Steve Morriss, Close the Loop has created a proprietary recycling process. Using state-of-the-art materials separation technology, all cartridges are recycled with zero waste to landfill. Traditionally difficult to process, imaging supplies require specialized equipment in order to recycle them. Close the Loop has patented four different processes for recycling imaging supplies, resulting in a zero-waste solution without using thermal destruction, which yields the maximum amount of reusable materials.
These hard-to-process mixed plastics, toner powder, inks and sponges are used in Close the Loop’s innovative patented composite eLumber product, thereby reusing previously unusable materials, preventing them from ending up in landfills or being incinerated. eLumber is a 100 percent recycled, weatherproof composite material that can be used for fences, garden edging, outdoor furniture and other applications. The company has rescued more than 10 million printer cartridges from landfills in Australia alone since 2003 and plans to replicate that success in North America.
“Toshiba's partnership with Close the Loop is a continued illustration of Toshiba’s environmental leadership in extended producer responsibility,” said Jim Tocash, vice president, North America for Close the Loop. “Our unique process will offer Toshiba America Business Solution’s customer a convenient, easy to use, environmentally sound way to responsibly dispose of spent imaging consumables.”
“Reducing the impact on the environment is a top priority of all major corporations,” said Tom Walter, director, Aftermarket Sales, Marketing and Operations for TABS. “Close the Loop has a proven business model, and we know their messages of zero waste and environmental responsibility will resonate with Toshiba’s employees, customers and investors around the world.”
Close the Loop and Toshiba will launch its collection and recycling program in North America on October 1, 2008. In support of the program, TABS is creating a Web portal interface for its dealers and customers at www.copiers.toshiba.com, which will feature details on how to become involved in the “Zero Waste to Landfill” project.
“Each year, more than 600 million imaging consumables are used in the U.S. and most end up in landfills,” added Tocash. “Our process gives Toshiba’s customers and dealers across the U.S. an easy way to make a difference and to do their part, and we’re excited to partner with Toshiba to help launch this important initiative.”
