Repair, Refurbish, Resell: Where Real Value Is Recovered

Jan-2006-Newsletter

Electronic devices do slow down. After all, battery life will fade, screens are susceptible to cracking, and keys stop responding every now and then. They rarely fail all at once, yet most organizations default to replacement. Not because it’s cheaper, but because it feels easier. That habit is costing more than most realize.

In this edition of In the Loop, we explore a lesser-known shift happening across IT, Operations, and Sustainability within businesses. Companies are making more intentional decisions for end-of-use electronics that prioritize better outcomes such as refurbishment, recycling, material recovery, and waste reduction.

From Storage Closet to Balance Sheet

Across offices, schools, and healthcare sites, retired electronics are sitting idle. They’re locked away due to data concerns, a lack of resale plans, or a simple backlog. The problem is that while they wait, their value erodes quickly.

Most laptops, printers, and network gear hold resale or redeployment potential for several years after retirement. Many need only minor work to return to service. However, without a plan, organizations either pay to store them or pay to dispose of them. In both cases, they recover nothing.

Refurbishment changes that equation by turning retired devices into assets rather than liabilities. Electronics that are four years old or less often have meaningful resale value, or can be redeployed internally, giving companies two clear paths to extend their useful life. Redeployment delays the need for new purchases and frees up storage space, resale recovers value from surplus equipment, while recycling provides a zero-waste outcome for unrecoverable devices. All options support sustainability goals by reducing e-waste and lowering the environmental impact of manufacturing new devices, strengthening the company’s sustainability reporting at the same time. See how Close the Loop can help.

“Extending the life of products through reuse and refurbishment is one of the most effective ways to reduce environmental impact while delivering value to customers.”

What’s Up in the Market?

Refurbished Demand Keeps Climbing

Marketplace data shows strong demand for refurbished mid-generation devices that balance performance and price. Two- to four-year-old phones and laptops now drive most resale margins, while interest is expanding into appliances and personal care electronics.

Plastics Pact Resets the Clock

After missing earlier targets, the U.S. Plastics Pact shifted timelines to 2030. The focus moved from pledges to execution — design changes, end markets, and reuse pilots.

Know Your Term — Recycled Feedstock

Recycled Feedstock is the term used to describe the processed material recovered as part of a recycling system. In electronics, this includes plastics, metals, and components reclaimed from devices that can no longer be reused. The idea behind recycled feedstock is that instead of utilizing raw materials, manufacturers redistribute recovered material back into production. This way, companies play a vital role in keeping valuable resources in circulation for longer.

Meet Houston Burger!

Houston joined the Close the Loop Renewed Solutions team in November 2025 as our E-Commerce Manager & New Business Representative, diving headfirst into the ITAD space.

“This experience has definitely changed my view on recycling and sustainability. Just the sheer amount of product we recycle and refurbish, from ink and toner to electronics, is astounding.”

Houston helps ensure electronic devices stay in the circular economy by extending their lifespan rather than ending up as waste. His work supports both our customers and the environment, proving that sustainability and smart business go hand in hand.

“It is visual proof that we are actively making the world a better place.”

Close the Loop Renewed Solutions is committed to demonstrating that the end of the lifecycle for electronic devices…is only the beginning.
